UTRGV's post-master's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate is taught 100% online, promoted as an accelerated one-year program, and admits once a year for Summer I. Its 520 clinical hours happen in the state where you live, with a preceptor who must be a board-certified psychiatrist or an ANCC-certified PMHNP. Below is the program as UTRGV publishes it, conflicts included, and how we find preceptors who meet that rule.

The program in brief

The 2026-27 catalog lists the certificate as a fully online program for nurse practitioners who want to add the psychiatric mental health specialty, with clinical work in outpatient, inpatient or private practice settings. UTRGV's June 2025 flyer calls it an accelerated one-year program designed for a quick move into practice. Applications feed a single Summer I start each year.

Unlike UTRGV's FNP programs, which are tied to Edinburg and a Texas RN license, the PMHNP certificate draws students from many states. Two things follow from that: your clinical sites are near your home rather than near campus, and your home state's rules on out-of-state programs come into play. CCNE accredits UTRGV's post-graduate APRN certificate programs, according to the School of Nursing's accreditation page.

Courses and credits: 21 or 18

The credit total changed recently. The 2026-27 catalog lists 21 credits in six courses, adding NURS 6350, a psychiatric pharmacotherapeutics course. The 2025-26 and 2023-24 catalogs, along with a 2017 graduation form, show 18 credits without it. If older material tells you 18, the 21-credit plan is the current one.

Both splits reach 520. The 2017 form spreads the hours across three courses, including the theory course NURS 6475, while the current syllabi load them into NURS 6476 and NURS 6620. The PMHNP practicum course guide takes each course in turn.

520 hours in your home state

According to the archived graduate FAQ, clinical hours begin in the program's second semester, the fall, alongside NURS 6475 and NURS 6476. Several weeks earlier you are placed in a clinical group you keep until graduation, and every student has an assigned clinical faculty member, an adjunct instructor who clears your site before any hours count. The Fall 2025 NURS 6476 syllabus repeats the point in its first week: no clinical time until your clinical faculty member gives clearance.

The same FAQ set three rules worth planning around. Hours from any earlier program do not transfer. Telepsychiatry counts only up to a cap, and UTRGV's sources disagree on the cap: 75 of 520 hours in the FAQ against 220 in the Spring 2026 NURS 6620 syllabus, as the telepsychiatry hours guide explains. And the FAQ recommended at least 120 hours with children and adolescents, where possible, for well-rounded board preparation. Who can precept a UTRGV PMHNP student

The PMHNP certificate has the strictest preceptor rule at UTRGV. The archived FAQ allowed exactly two kinds of preceptor, with no exceptions: a psychiatrist certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and more than a year past residency, or a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

That leaves out clinicians the FNP courses accept, such as physician assistants and family nurse practitioners, and it leaves out psychiatrists less than a year out of residency. A psychiatric practice may employ several prescribers, so the name on your preceptor data sheet has to be the one who holds the right certification. Your own workplace is off the table. The archived FAQ says the practicum cannot be completed where you are employed, even if a qualified psychiatrist or PMHNP works there.

Placement assistance and the affiliation agreement

UTRGV's two public statements on placement help point in different directions. The live June 2025 flyer lists preceptor placement assistance to support clinical requirements, without saying what that includes. The graduate FAQ, removed from UTRGV's site and archived in May 2025, said UTRGV did not assist with placement and that each student secures a site in their state of residence, approved by UTRGV's clinical advisors. The flyer is the current document, so ask the program what its assistance covers; the PMHNP placement assistance guide sets out both sides.

However a site is found, it needs an affiliation agreement. UTRGV's archived PMHNP guidelines for the Clinical Request Form describe this path:

Take the form to your chosen siteThe form carries the facility, its agreement contact and the preceptor, and you return it completed to the graduate nursing office and the PMHNP faculty.
UTRGV contacts the siteThe PMHNP unit writes to the person named on the form. The agreement is either UTRGV's standard version or the site's own, approved by a UTRGV authorizing official.

Admission: which license, which deadline

UTRGV's admission sources do not agree, and the differences decide who can apply. The table sets the current catalog and deadlines page against the current flyer, with older wording where it differs.

The catalog also asks for advanced health assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology courses equal to NURS 6305, NURS 6306 and NURS 6304, each passed with a B or better, a 3.0 GPA in your graduate program and an interview held in person or online. When the license rules clash, plan around the stricter one, the catalog's APRN requirement, and confirm with the program before relying on the flyer's RN path.

Living outside Texas

UTRGV takes part in NC-SARA, and its state authorization list covers every state except California, plus DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. UTRGV publishes no nursing-specific licensure findings by state. The flyer instead advises applicants to confirm, before applying, that the board of nursing in their home state has approved UTRGV.

Your clinical hours happen in that home state, and states treat out-of-state programs very differently. Some boards expect approval or notice before an outside program places students in local clinicals; others leave post-licensure programs alone. Do I ever have to travel to a UTRGV campus for the PMHNP certificate?

The catalog calls the program 100% online, and the archived graduate FAQ answered no when asked whether students travel to UTRGV. The same FAQ elsewhere mentioned on-campus weeks, so the old wording was not consistent. The admission interview can be live or virtual. Ask the program whether any in-person session is planned for your cohort.

Is the UTRGV PMHNP certificate really one year long?

The flyer calls it an accelerated one-year program. UTRGV publishes no term-by-term plan, but the pieces fit that claim: a Summer I start, clinical hours beginning in the fall with NURS 6476, and NURS 6620 in the spring, going by the terms on their syllabi. That reading is ours; your program of study is the authority.

When should I start looking for a PMHNP preceptor?

The week your acceptance arrives. UTRGV's archived guidelines have you show that letter when you approach a site, affiliation agreements can take 30 to 90 days, and hours start in the fall. A Summer I start leaves only a few months between acceptance and clinicals, so every week of search time counts.

Can I enroll in the UTRGV PMHNP certificate from California?

California is the one state missing from UTRGV's state authorization list, even though the archived FAQ once named it among the states past PMHNP students came from. California's board also requires its own approval before an out-of-state NP program places students in clinicals there. Ask the program directly before you apply from California.

Which certification exam do UTRGV PMHNP graduates take?

UTRGV's program pages name no certifying body for graduates. ANCC appears only in the preceptor rule, where an ANCC-certified PMHNP is one of the two allowed preceptor types. The certification exams guide covers the national boards and the state licensing step that follows them.
