What the MSN-FNP is made of

The 2026-27 graduate catalog lists one MSN at UTRGV, the Family Nurse Practitioner, at 48 credits split into three blocks: 30 credits of required core, 15 credits of practice courses and a 3-credit capstone. A few School of Nursing pages still mention three MSN programs, but the education and administration tracks dropped out of the catalog after 2023-24.

UTRGV lists the program modality as campus, and the catalog's campus table marks it for Edinburg alone; FNP class sessions and the health assessment lab meet in the Health Affairs Building East. The only published plan of study, from 2019, complicates that picture by tagging most core courses as online courses. Expect Edinburg for the FNP courses and labs, and ask your advisor which core courses your cohort takes online.

Full-time and part-time routes

UTRGV's only published sequence is the 2019 program of study, and it offers two routes. Full time takes five semesters across two years, starting in the fall and ending in the second spring. Part time stretches to eight semesters across three years. On either route, NURS 6612 and NURS 6613 fill your final fall and spring, which is when the heaviest preceptor hours arrive.

Read the 2019 order as a sketch rather than a promise, because today's catalog prerequisites break it in places. NURS 6612 now requires NURS 6311 and NURS 6347, yet the full-time route sets NURS 6311 after FNP I, and NURS 6347 now requires NURS 6310, which the full-time route schedules a term later. The plan your advisor gives you is the one that counts.

How preceptors are arranged and approved

The current FNP syllabi leave the arranging to you. The Spring 2026 NURS 6305 syllabus has students set up their own preceptors and clinical sites, and every FNP course points to a list of approved preceptors and affiliated sites posted in Brightspace (D2L). The older 2023-24 Graduate Nursing Student Guide, now archived, framed finding and recruiting preceptors as a job for faculty and students together. The published steps run in this order:

3. Request a new site if you need oneA clinic outside the list goes through the Clinical Request Form, sent by DocuSign, so UTRGV can set up an affiliation agreement. UTRGV's PMHNP guidelines put agreements at 30 to 90 days; see the Clinical Request Form guide.
4. Get the course coordinator's approvalIn NURS 6347 the course coordinator approves each site, and only university-approved sites count.
5. File the paperwork a week aheadThe signed preceptor agreement and the Mandatory Weekly Time Report go in at least one week before your first clinical day, and your course objectives travel to the preceptor with the agreement.

Rules that shape your timeline

• Five years. You must finish within five years of admission. The seven-year limit the catalog also prints names only the discontinued administrator and educator MSNs.
• Grades. The archived 2023-24 guide stops progression after a grade below B in any clinical course, and the catalog requires a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Timing of hours. Finishing early needs a legitimate reason and the course coordinator's prior approval, and hours never count for two clinical courses you take at once.
• Passing FNP I and II. You need the full hours and a satisfactory preceptorship grade, whatever your theory grade.
• Clearance. A cleared background check (seven years back, honored while your enrollment is unbroken), the School's immunization form, liability insurance and HIPAA training come before your first clinical day.
