Who we are
UTRGV Preceptor is an independent placement service. Our placement advisors focus on one kind of work: finding clinicians willing to precept nurse practitioner students, checking each one against the school's rules, and getting the paperwork ready. This site and the desk behind it serve students of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Nursing, whether they study in Edinburg, in Brownsville or online. Students reach us through this site's form, chat and text line, and every request is read against the course it names.
UTRGV makes every decision about its clinical courses, preceptors and sites. Our role is to put a strong, well-matched preceptor in front of your faculty early enough for that decision to happen on time, and to keep the search going until your schedule is set.
Why a desk just for UTRGV
UTRGV's clinical process has its own names and its own timing, and knowing them is most of the work. FNP students choose from an approved list in Brightspace or bring in a new site through a DocuSign Clinical Request Form, with an affiliation agreement that can take one to three months. NURS 6347 wants two nurse practitioners at two sites. NURS 6612 and NURS 6613 need 16 and then 24 hours a week. PMHNP certificate students need a board-certified psychiatrist or PMHNP in their home state.
A search that knows those rules from the first call saves you weeks. That is why we ask for your course number before almost anything else: the course decides who may precept you, how many hours a week they must offer and what UTRGV will ask for before your first day.

- With you to the last week: a replacement search started right away if a preceptor steps back, and reminders for the evaluations that close each course.
How we research UTRGV's rules
Every guide on this site is written from UTRGV's own documents: the 2026-27 graduate catalog, the public course syllabi, School of Nursing pages and flyers, archived copies of pages UTRGV has since taken down, and the Texas Board of Nursing's rules. Each page lists its sources and the date we last checked them.
Where UTRGV's documents disagree, we show both sides and say which is newer: the 605, 740 and 800 FNP hour totals, the 75 or 220 telepsychiatry hours in the PMHNP certificate, and the flyer's placement assistance line beside the archived FAQ. Where UTRGV publishes nothing, such as the approved list itself or a DNP practice-hour total, we say so and send you to your course faculty.

Working with preceptors
Preceptors give students their time, so we guard it. When we call a clinician about a UTRGV student, we lead with the course, the weekly hours and the dates, confirm credentials in a single conversation, and have the agreement and course objectives ready to sign. We work with NPs, PAs and physicians for the FNP courses, psychiatrists and PMHNPs for the certificate, and physicians and DNP-prepared APRNs for DNP projects. When a preceptor's plans change, one call to us starts the replacement search, so the student's hours keep moving.
Clinicians curious about hosting a student can read what precepting a UTRGV student involves. Students can start with a short placement request: program, city and start date are enough for a placement advisor to reply with next steps.

Who will I be working with?
A placement advisor on our placement desk. Your advisor reads your request, confirms your course and dates with you, runs the search and stays in touch until your preceptor agreement is signed and your schedule is set. You can reach the desk through the form, the chat or a text message.
Is this service just for UTRGV students?
This site and its placement desk are set up for UTRGV nursing students, and every search we run from it is planned around UTRGV's courses, forms and preceptor rules. That focus is the point: the preceptor we bring you already fits the course your faculty will approve them for.
Can you help if I already have a preceptor for one course?
Yes. A search can cover a single piece: a second nurse practitioner at a different site for NURS 6347, a preceptor for NURS 6613 after your NURS 6612 rotation, or a replacement partway through a semester. Tell us what you already have and what is missing, and we plan around it.
Why do your guides cite archived UTRGV pages?
Because several useful UTRGV documents, including the 2023-24 graduate guide and the graduate FAQ, have been taken off the live site but still explain parts of the clinical process. We label each one archived, give its capture date and set it beside the current source, so you can see what changed and what still applies.
