UTRGV's FNP courses start your preceptor search with a list of approved preceptors and affiliated sites posted inside Brightspace, where only enrolled students can see it. A site on that list already has UTRGV's paperwork in place, which can save weeks, but it is not a promise that anyone there has room for you this term. Here is how the syllabi describe the list, where it falls short and when to reach past it.

One list, four names

Every FNP syllabus sends you to the same resource, yet no two describe it alike. UTRGV moved its courses from Blackboard to D2L Brightspace in Summer 2025, and some documents kept the older wording, which is why a Spring 2026 syllabus still sends you to a Blackboard forms tab.

None of UTRGV's public documents explains what "Evergreen" means. If a site's status is unclear, your course coordinator is the one to ask.

What a place on the list tells you

A listed site is one UTRGV has already approved or holds an affiliation agreement with. That is the list's great value: you skip the Clinical Request Form and the 30 to 90 days a new agreement can take, because the paperwork between the facility and UTRGV is already done.

Because every entry has already cleared UTRGV's review, the list also doubles as a guide to the kinds of practices that take UTRGV NP students. Treat it as a set of doors that have opened before, and knock first on the ones that fit your course.

What the list is not

Public. It sits inside Brightspace for enrolled students, so applicants and outside searchers cannot read it.
A roster of open seats. It shows that a site is approved, not that a preceptor there has time this term.
Approval for your course on its own. In NURS 6347, the sites you choose still go to the course coordinator before you file the agreement.
A fit for every course. NURS 6347 calls for two master's-prepared NPs at two different sites, one student per preceptor, so a physician or PA who suits NURS 6612 will not work there.
A PMHNP tool, as far as public sources show. The PMHNP documents describe a home-state site approved by UTRGV's clinical advisors and do not mention a posted list.
A replacement for your paperwork. Every course still needs its own signed preceptor agreement and weekly time report.

Why a listed site can still say no

An affiliation agreement is a contract between UTRGV and a facility. It does not oblige any clinician there to teach a student, and preceptors say yes one term at a time. These are the usual reasons a listed name turns into a polite no:

The preceptor already has a student this term, from UTRGV or elsewhere, and NURS 6347 allows only one student per preceptor.
The weekly load is too heavy: 16 hours a week for NURS 6612 and 24 for NURS 6613, across two 7-week rotations, is a real commitment for a busy clinic.
People move. The NP who precepted last year may have left, cut back to part time or changed clinics.
The practice has paused students for the term, or its own onboarding cannot finish before your start date.
The clinician's role does not match the course, such as a PA offered for a course that asks for NPs.

The list cannot show any of this, so read each entry as a lead to confirm, not a seat.

File your agreement on timeThe signed agreement and the weekly time report are due at least a week before your first hour; the forms guide lists each one.

When to go beyond the list

Reach past the list when no listed preceptor within reach can take you, when your course needs something the list lacks (a second NP site for NURS 6347, for example), or when a clinician you trust works at a facility UTRGV has no agreement with. Each of these means a new affiliation through the Clinical Request Form.

Timing decides the rest. Because a new agreement can run up to 90 days, our advice is to start a new-site request alongside your list calls if the list has not produced a firm yes by the start of the semester before your course.

A common mistake is treating a name on the list as a confirmed placement. Until the preceptor agrees to your dates and your course coordinator approves the site, you have a lead, not a preceptor.

How our search uses the list first

Listed sites come first in every search we run for a UTRGV student, because they skip the agreement wait. You tell us which listed facilities are near you and which you have already called; we approach the rest, confirm room for your exact dates and course, and come back with a preceptor who has said yes.

When the list is spent, we widen the search across the Rio Grande Valley and the rest of Texas, or your home state for the PMHNP, and prepare the facility and preceptor details a new Clinical Request Form needs so the agreement starts complete. Finding a preceptor explains where willing preceptors tend to be, and the request form gets your search moving.

Questions UTRGV students ask

Can I see UTRGV's approved preceptor list before I start the program?

No. UTRGV posts it inside Brightspace, the learning system enrolled students reach through myUTRGV, and it does not appear on the public website. Applicants can plan with the published course hours and preceptor rules instead, and ask the School of Nursing about clinical sites once admitted.

Do PMHNP certificate students get the approved list?

UTRGV's public PMHNP documents never mention a posted list. They describe a site in your state of residence approved by UTRGV's clinical advisors, a Clinical Request Form where an agreement is needed and clearance from your clinical faculty. Whether the flyer's placement assistance includes site suggestions is not stated, so ask the program.

If a site is on the list, do I still need a preceptor agreement?

Yes. The list covers the site, not your rotation. Each FNP course still expects a signed Student/Preceptor Agreement, the course objectives shared with your preceptor and a Mandatory Weekly Time Report, all filed at least a week before you begin at the site.

Can my own workplace count as a UTRGV clinical site?

For the PMHNP certificate, the archived FAQ says no: the practicum cannot be completed where you work. The FNP syllabi reviewed here set no rule either way, so check with your course coordinator before counting on your employer's clinic, even if it appears on the list.
