Hidalgo County clinicals for UTRGV nurse practitioner students
UTRGV teaches its MSN-FNP on the Edinburg campus, in a county with seven Medicare-certified hospitals by CMS's count. Among its hospitals, only DHR Health, Driscoll and Valley Baptist's Weslaco micro-hospital publish anything on student rotations outside physician training, and none describes matching an NP student with a preceptor, so most placements here start with one clinician at a practice or health center.

Hidalgo County in numbers
The Census Bureau put Hidalgo County at 921,549 residents on July 1, 2025, about 2.9% of Texas. McAllen (150,640), Edinburg (110,700), Mission (88,992), Pharr (80,830) and Weslaco (44,203) are its largest cities. USDA's 2023 codes rate the county metropolitan, and HRSA flags it as a border county.
UTRGV's catalog offers the MSN-FNP in Edinburg and nowhere else, and its syllabi put class and lab in the Health Affairs Building East. McAllen sits roughly 10 road miles from campus, Pharr about 15, and Mission and Weslaco about 20, so a preceptor anywhere in the county keeps clinical days and class days within an easy drive.

DHR reports more than 100 academic affiliations but names none; ask your course faculty whether UTRGV's NP students are covered. A hospital with no student page has simply posted no route; the way in is a staff clinician willing to teach you.
Health centers, UT Health RGV and the McAllen VA clinic
UTRGV's FNP courses are primary care courses, so clinics are the natural fit. HRSA lists one health center organization in the county, Nuestra Clínica del Valle, with 10 active sites in San Juan, Mission, Edcouch, Edinburg, Mercedes and Donna. It posts no student page, so the approach goes through an NP or physician at one of its sites. Independent family and pediatric practices decide for themselves, and one family practice seeing children and adults can host a whole course.
UT Health RGV, the UTRGV School of Medicine's clinical practice, has clinics in Edinburg, McAllen and Weslaco. UTRGV's AHEC page says School of Nursing AHEC scholars train at the program's centers, one of them in San Carlos; nothing published covers regular FNP course hours there, so ask your course faculty.
The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend system has a McAllen clinic. Its training page describes only a psychology internship; nursing students reach VA through their school's VA affiliation, and whether UTRGV has one for NP students is not public.
HRSA shortage labels in Hidalgo County
HRSA designates the entire county a mental health shortage area (MHCA 38, Tropical Texas, score 14 of 25). Its primary care designations cover only parts of the county: eight low-income population areas, the highest scoring 20. Texas border counties averaged 87 APRNs per 100,000 residents in 2023, DSHS reports, versus 118 elsewhere.
For FNP students, patients are plentiful; the work is finding a clinician with room for your weekly load (NURS 6612 asks 16 hours, NURS 6613 asks 24). For PMHNP certificate students living here, the mental health label matters more. UTRGV's PMHNP courses take only a psychiatrist with ABPN certification and over a year since residency or an ANCC-certified PMHNP, never at your workplace; hours begin in the fall, so start looking before your Summer I start.
Matching Hidalgo County sites to UTRGV courses
UTRGV's FNP syllabi make the arranging your job. Either pick from the approved list UTRGV keeps in Brightspace, or nominate a new clinic on the Clinical Request Form; that starts an affiliation agreement, which UTRGV's PMHNP guidance says needs 30 to 90 days. Faculty clear each site before hours count.

Questions UTRGV students ask
Can I set up a DHR Health rotation on my own for an FNP course?
Not directly. DHR's Student Affairs page describes a school-to-hospital process: the school confirms its affiliation, its coordinator secures a preceptor and sends the formal request. Your part is finding a DHR clinician willing to precept you; ask your course faculty who sends UTRGV's request. The residencies DHR runs with the UTRGV School of Medicine train physicians, not nurses.
Could Driscoll's Edinburg hospital cover the pediatric part of NURS 6612?
Driscoll routes student placements through myClinicalExchange, starting with an approved affiliate school's coordinator, and names no rule for NP students. Ask your course faculty whether UTRGV is a Driscoll affiliate. Since NURS 6612 centers on common episodic and chronic conditions in children and adults, a family practice that sees both can cover the course in one placement.
Will a McAllen or Edinburg clinic count for the rural health course?

Where do PMHNP certificate students near McAllen find a psychiatric preceptor?
Outpatient psychiatric practices and behavioral health clinics, provided the preceptor holds the credential UTRGV names (an ABPN-certified psychiatrist past the one-year mark after residency, or an ANCC-certified PMHNP) and the site is not your employer.
