UTRGV's current flyer for the online PMHNP certificate lists preceptor placement assistance, yet no public page says what that assistance includes, and the program's older FAQ, now archived, said students secure their own site in their home state. Both statements are genuine UTRGV documents. Here they are side by side, with the questions worth putting to the program and how our search fits whichever answer comes back.

Two UTRGV statements that point different ways

The live flyer for the post-master's PMHNP certificate, a PDF last modified in June 2025, lists this among the program's features: "Preceptor Placement Assistance provided to support clinical requirements." It is the only UTRGV document that advertises placement assistance for a graduate nursing program, and it is welcome news for anyone applying.

The School of Nursing's graduate FAQ gave a different answer. Asked whether UTRGV assists with clinical placement, it said no, and put the responsibility on the student to secure a site that UTRGV's clinical advisors approve, located in the student's state of residence. That page is gone from the live site. Its last archived copy is from May 1, 2025, and an older PDF version of the same FAQ, archived in 2022, answers the same way.

Which statement is current

The flyer is the current public statement. It is live on UTRGV's website, and its PDF was last modified in June 2025, about a month after the last archived capture of the FAQ, which was still online at that point. The FAQ and the 2023 guidelines survive only as archives, so they describe how things worked rather than a live policy, though they remain the most detailed public account of how PMHNP sites were set up.

Neither source explains the other. The flyer does not say the FAQ's answer changed, and nothing public says why the FAQ came down. The fair reading is simple: UTRGV now advertises some form of placement help for PMHNP students, and its public pages do not define it. That is a question to settle with the program, not a reason for worry.

What the assistance might cover, and what is not defined

Even under the FAQ's "no," UTRGV's older PMHNP documents describe real support around a clinical site. Any of it could be what the flyer has in mind:

The PMHNP unit contacts the site named on your Clinical Request Form and works through the affiliation agreement, and graduate program staff let you know when it is done (2023 guidelines).
UTRGV's clinical advisors approve the site (archived FAQ).
Every student gets a clinical faculty member of their own, whose clearance comes before any hours (archived FAQ and 2025-26 syllabi).
Each student is placed in a clinical group weeks ahead of the first practicum courses and stays in it to the end (archived FAQ).

What no public source defines: whether UTRGV identifies preceptors for students, whether it keeps contacts or affiliated sites in states outside Texas, how early the help begins, and whether students are still expected to bring a site of their own. What to ask the PMHNP program

Put your questions to the PMHNP program coordinator or the School of Nursing's program coordinator for graduate student services soon after admission, and keep the reply in writing. These are the ones that shape your search:

Does the placement assistance include finding a preceptor, or does it cover the affiliation agreement and clearance once I name one?
Are there psychiatrists or PMHNPs in my state who already precept UTRGV students?
By what date should my site and preceptor be named for fall clinical hours?
Who are the clinical advisors who approve sites, and what do they check?

Asking signals planning, not doubt. A clear answer tells you how much of the search is yours and how early to begin.

The rules a PMHNP site meets either way

Whoever finds the preceptor, the same rules apply. The preceptor must hold ABPN certification as a psychiatrist with over a year since residency, or ANCC certification as a PMHNP, as the preceptor requirements guide sets out. The site cannot be your workplace, it sits in your state of residence, and your clinical faculty must clear it before a single hour counts.

Timing is the other constant. Hours begin in the fall semester, during NURS 6475 and NURS 6476, only a few months after the Summer I start, and the 2023 guidelines budget 30 to 90 days to process an affiliation agreement when the paperwork is accurate and complete. Our arithmetic: fall 2026 classes began August 26, and 90 days before that is May 28. On a similar calendar, a slow agreement for fall hours needs its request in by late May, which is why we begin PMHNP searches as soon as a student is admitted.

If the assistance turns out to mean UTRGV identifies a preceptor for you, our search gives you a second, independent option near home and a backup if the first falls through. If it means UTRGV handles the agreement and clearance once you bring a site, our search is the part that finds one. Either way, UTRGV's faculty approve the site, and our job is to hand them a complete request with time to spare.

Questions UTRGV students ask

Should I look for a PMHNP preceptor before UTRGV admits me?

You can scout, but the formal steps follow admission. UTRGV's 2023 PMHNP guidelines had students present their letter of acceptance when seeking an affiliation agreement or preceptorship. Using the months before that letter to map practices near you means you can move quickly once it arrives, which matters when hours start in the fall.

Can I do UTRGV PMHNP clinicals in a state other than the one I live in?

The archived FAQ placed the site in the state where you live, with UTRGV's clinical advisors approving it, and the catalog asks for an APRN license in that same state. A site across a state line falls outside that wording. If you live near a border and the best preceptor practices on the other side, ask your clinical faculty before investing time in it.

Is UTRGV's old PMHNP FAQ still official?

It is no longer on UTRGV's live website, and the June 2025 flyer is newer. Parts of the FAQ, such as the preceptor qualification rule and the bar on workplace sites, have no newer public replacement, so they remain the best public guide. Confirm anything you rely on with your clinical faculty.

Does UTRGV's online PMHNP certificate take students from every state?

Of the fifty states, only California is missing from UTRGV's state authorization list for online study; the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and DC are on it too. The flyer asks applicants to confirm that their home state's board of nursing has approved UTRGV. Some states also set rules for out-of-state programs placing students.
