West Texas and the Panhandle: a clinical map for UTRGV NP students
From Wichita Falls and Amarillo down to the Permian Basin and San Angelo, this region spans 102 counties, 80 of them nonmetro. Hospital student pages here survive only as search excerpts, so this guide pairs them with HRSA data, for UTRGV FNP students with family out west and DNP and PMHNP students who make their home here.

Six councils, seven cities and long drives
The region joins the Panhandle, South Plains, Nortex and Permian Basin planning bodies with the West Central Texas and Concho Valley councils of governments. Edwards County (Rocksprings) belongs here because the Concho Valley council's own coverage map, uploaded in August 2025, includes it. Census estimates counted 2,116,587 residents on July 1, 2025.
Lubbock leads at 273,071 people, and Amarillo, Midland, Abilene, Odessa, Wichita Falls and San Angelo each top 100,000. Edinburg is roughly 440 road miles from San Angelo, 615 from Lubbock and 735 from Amarillo, which is why the UTRGV students who train out here are the ones whose families or homes are here.

Hendrick's note covers one department, and UTRGV's FNP courses center on primary care, not emergency care. Where a system publishes nothing for NP students, a clinic with a willing preceptor is the usual way in.
Health centers from Vernon to Fort Stockton
HRSA lists 69 active health center sites under 12 organizations. Community Health Center of Lubbock has 12, North Central Texas Community Health Care has 11 in Wichita Falls and Vernon, and Frontera Healthcare Network has 10 in Brady, Menard, Junction and Mason. Midland Community Healthcare Services and the Ector County Hospital District's look-alike centers each run four, in Midland and Odessa, and La Esperanza Clinic runs five in San Angelo.
Regence Health Network covers Plainview, Amarillo and Hereford; South Plains Rural Health Services reaches Lamesa, Big Spring and Levelland; and the Shackelford County Community Resource Center serves Baird, Cross Plains, Albany, Clyde, Merkel and Breckenridge. Cross Timbers Health Clinics (Brownwood, De Leon), Cactus Health Services (Fort Stockton) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Lubbock, Abilene) complete it.
Shortage and rural data for 102 counties
In HRSA's September 27, 2026 records, every county here is a mental health shortage area: 97 county-wide geographic designations plus low-income designations for Coleman, Cottle, Foard, Lubbock and Potter, with Pecos County scoring 20. For primary care, 60 counties are geographic shortage areas, 35 are designated for low-income residents and parts of Lubbock, Potter and Randall are shortage tracts; Hall County scores highest, at 20.
USDA's 2023 codes class 80 counties as nonmetro, holding 30.6% of the region's people, and 32 carry the most rural code, 9. CMS lists 94 hospitals, 53 of them critical access and 9 psychiatric. Pecos is the region's only U.S.-Mexico border county in HRSA data.
For PMHNP students, a mental health label on every county argues for an early start. Distance may make telepsychiatry tempting, but UTRGV's limit is in conflict: the archived FAQ allowed 75 of the 520 hours, while the Spring 2026 NURS 6620 syllabus allows 220; telepsychiatry hours sets out both.
Course by course out west
NURS 6612 (224 hours at 16 a week) and NURS 6613 (336 at 24 a week) call for a family practice treating children and adults, such as a health center in Lubbock, Wichita Falls or San Angelo. NURS 6305 needs 45 hours of direct care in a primary care clinic. For NURS 6311, rural primary care is ordinary here: Frontera's clinics in Brady, Menard and Junction or South Plains Rural Health Services in Lamesa and Levelland fit its focus.
NURS 6347 calls for a pair of master's-prepared NPs working at separate sites, each taking one student, so two clinics in the same city keep driving down. PMHNP students need an ABPN psychiatrist or ANCC-certified PMHNP for NURS 6476 and NURS 6620, never at their own workplace, and DNP students an approved project site with a physician or DNP-prepared APRN preceptor.
Approval still runs through UTRGV
Living far from Edinburg does not change who approves the site. For FNP courses, UTRGV's syllabi leave the arranging to the student, choosing a site on the approved preceptor list or adding a clinic through the Clinical Request Form, with 30 to 90 days allowed for the agreement. If Hendrick is in the plan, the excerpt's warning that a new agreement may take several months means starting sooner still.
The FNP courses run as two 7-week rotations while classes meet on the Edinburg campus, so work out with your course coordinator how a West Texas rotation fits. PMHNP hours wait on clearance from the student's clinical faculty member, and DNP students file the affiliation agreement and preceptor forms. Does Hendrick Health take nurse practitioner students from online programs?
According to a search excerpt of its student requirements page, its emergency department no longer accepts NP students from online programs; the excerpt says nothing about other departments. Any rotation also needs a school affiliation agreement, so confirm directly with Hendrick before planning around it.
Which West Texas hospital mentions NP students?
Medical Center Health System in Odessa. A search excerpt describes its Family Health Clinic as a teaching facility for rotations that include NP students, with requests handled by Student Services. The other systems' excerpts cover RN, LVN and new-graduate programs or give general student rules without NP detail.
Is Lubbock an option for a UTRGV FNP rotation?
It can be. No published UTRGV rule keeps FNP clinicals in the Valley, but the site needs UTRGV's approval, whether it is already listed or added by agreement. Since FNP classes meet in Edinburg, agree the plan with your course coordinator first, then look at Lubbock's health center sites and family practices.
Is West Texas a good fit for the NURS 6311 rural health course?
Yes. Eighty of the 102 counties are nonmetro, and 53 critical access hospitals operate here. Health center sites in towns such as Brady, Junction, Lamesa and Levelland offer rural primary care, subject to UTRGV approving the site and preceptor.
