Victoria and the Golden Crescent for UTRGV NP students
Half the Golden Crescent's residents live in nonmetro counties, and Victoria's two hospital systems publish no route for outside nurse practitioner students. For a UTRGV student based here, the search runs through rural health clinics, the region's one health center network and independent practices in Victoria and the county seats.

The seven Golden Crescent counties
The Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission serves Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties, 195,975 people as of July 1, 2025. Victoria County holds 92,656 and the city of Victoria 66,500. Each of the other six counties has between about 7,000 and 21,000 residents, and Port Lavaca, Cuero, Gonzales, Edna, Yoakum and Hallettsville are the main towns.
Victoria and Cuero are roughly 220 road miles from the Edinburg campus, with Port Lavaca near 225 and Gonzales near 255, each more than four hours by car. That is a long way to pair with in-person classes, so the region mainly concerns online DNP and PMHNP certificate students who live here and FNP students arranging clinical time near family. Unlike the Laredo and Middle Rio Grande regions, none of these counties carries HRSA's border flag.
Citizens, DeTar and the smaller hospitals
CMS counts eight Medicare-certified hospitals in the region: four acute care and four critical access. DSHS rates both Victoria systems as Advanced (Level III) trauma facilities, and DeTar also operates a Basic (Level IV) one.

Neither system's silence rules it out. A Citizens or DeTar clinician who agrees to precept can open the door, with UTRGV's agreement steps to follow, and the four critical access hospitals are worth the same question.
Health center and rural clinic options
HRSA lists a single health center organization with sites in the region: Community Health Centers of South Central Texas, based in Gonzales, with two sites in Gonzales County and one in Victoria. HRSA's facility shortage designations also name five rural health clinics across the Golden Crescent, the small-town primary care setting that NURS 6311 is built around.
Solo and group practices in family medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine, in Victoria and the county seats, fill in the rest. The first contact is a clinician who agrees to teach; a practice or clinic new to UTRGV then goes through the agreement process before any hours are logged.
Shortage designations: income and distance
Most Golden Crescent primary care designations rest on income rather than geography. Jackson County is a county-wide geographic shortage area, and the other six are designated for their low-income residents, with Goliad the top scorer at 15. Mental health designations reach further: Calhoun, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson and Victoria are county-wide geographic shortage areas, DeWitt and Lavaca low-income ones, and Calhoun scores 17.
Calhoun, DeWitt, Gonzales, Jackson and Lavaca are nonmetro and hold 49% of the region's people; Victoria and Goliad are metro. Of the 30,498 nurse practitioners DSHS counted in active Texas practice in 2023, 7.4% worked in nonmetro counties away from the border, the category most of this region falls in. For PMHNP students, five geographic mental health designations mean a qualifying psychiatrist or PMHNP may be a drive away.
UTRGV courses in a Golden Crescent setting
UTRGV's FNP syllabi expect you to secure preceptors yourself, choosing from its approved preceptor and affiliated-site list in Brightspace (D2L) or nominating a Victoria-area clinic through the Clinical Request Form; by UTRGV's guidelines the resulting affiliation agreement takes 30 to 90 days. Questions UTRGV students ask
Do Citizens Medical Center or DeTar take nurse practitioner students?
Neither publishes a process. Citizens' Education page lists no clinical-placement route, and search results for DeTar's site showed no student-rotation page. A clinician at either hospital who agrees to precept is the way in, and your course faculty confirm that UTRGV can sign an agreement with the hospital before your hours begin.
Can I do FNP clinical hours in Victoria while taking classes in Edinburg?
UTRGV sets no written rule against it, but the FNP is taught on the Edinburg campus, so a Victoria site works best for students who live here or can stay near family during clinical blocks. Check the course's weekly load, 16 hours in NURS 6612 and 24 in NURS 6613, against your class days with your course coordinator.
How long does adding a Victoria clinic to UTRGV's sites take?
Plan on 30 to 90 days for the affiliation agreement once a complete, accurate Clinical Request Form reaches UTRGV. The form names the person at the clinic who approves agreements, and the clinic may sign UTRGV's standard agreement or send its own for approval by a UTRGV authorizing official. Start the term before your hours, not the month before.
Where can PMHNP students find psychiatric preceptors in the Golden Crescent?
Begin with psychiatrists and psychiatric NPs in Victoria's outpatient practices and hospital systems, then widen toward Corpus Christi or San Antonio if the local list is short. UTRGV counts hours only under a psychiatrist board-certified by the ABPN and more than a year beyond residency, or a PMHNP board-certified by ANCC, and not at the place you work.
