East Texas and the Golden Triangle for UTRGV nurse practitioner students
Three CHRISTUS Health ministries publish student request pages in East Texas, and the one in Tyler is blunt: have a committed preceptor before you ask for a rotation. This guide covers 38 counties for UTRGV FNP students with relatives here and DNP and PMHNP students whose home is here.

Thirty-eight counties, Texarkana to Port Arthur
The East Texas Council of Governments, the Ark-Tex and Deep East Texas councils and the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission, which now counts Jasper County as a member, make up the region. Census estimates counted 1,991,836 residents across its 38 counties on July 1, 2025.
Tyler (113,723) and Beaumont (112,967) lead, ahead of Longview, Port Arthur, Texarkana, Lufkin and Nacogdoches. Beaumont lies roughly 425 road miles from Edinburg and Texarkana about 665, so the UTRGV students who train here are the ones with roots in the region.
CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances: preceptor first, then the form
The Tyler-based system states its terms on its rotation page. Students must confirm with their school that an active affiliation agreement with CHRISTUS exists, be in good standing, have a resume and already have a preceptor; the page adds that students "are discouraged from cold calling for a preceptor or rotation availability."
You apply online with your resume and the preceptor's agreement (an email copy or screenshot is enough), and the school sends a letter of good standing. There are three windows: apply by March 1 to start in April or later, by July 1 to start from August, or by November 1 to start from December, and expect an emailed answer within four weeks of the deadline. CHRISTUS employees also need a professional recommendation and Exhibit B.
In UTRGV's MSN plan, NURS 6612 falls in a fall semester and NURS 6613 in spring, so those rotations point to the July 1 and November 1 windows. If UTRGV and CHRISTUS need a new agreement, UTRGV's 30 to 90 days for that step come before the deadline, which moves a Tyler search months ahead of the term.
Longview, Texarkana and the Beaumont hospitals
CHRISTUS Good Shepherd in Longview offers preceptorships with physicians, NPs and nurses. Its page makes confirming an active CHRISTUS agreement the student's task, wants the online preceptor request 60 days before the rotation and requires a fresh application every semester. CHRISTUS St. Michael in Texarkana takes an online rotation request that asks for school and course details, then judges whether it meets basic criteria for further consideration.
CHRISTUS keeps request pages for only four ministries, and CHRISTUS Southeast Texas in Beaumont is not one of them, though the system-wide rule, a signed affiliation agreement (CHRISTUS calls it a CEAA) before the placement begins, applies there too. According to a search excerpt, Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas offers internships through affiliated schools and sends students to its Education Department to check on their school's agreement, with no NP process described. UT Health East Texas excerpts show only an RN extern program.
Health centers from Mount Pleasant to Port Arthur
HRSA lists 112 active health center sites under 15 organizations. Longview Wellness Center runs 31, mostly in Gregg County. Special Health Resources for Texas has 12 in Longview, Texarkana, Tyler and Paris, and Tyler Family Circle of Care 10 in Tyler, Athens and Jacksonville.
Gulf Coast Health Center runs 10 sites in Port Arthur, Jasper, Orange and Silsbee; Health Opportunities for the People of East Texas has 9 from Center and Tenaha to San Augustine; East Texas Border Health Clinic has 7 in Texarkana, Marshall and Atlanta; East Texas Community Health Services has 6 in Nacogdoches and Lufkin. For PMHNP students, one look-alike stands out: Sabine Valley Regional MHMR Center, with sites in Clarksville, Gilmer, Longview, Texarkana and Jefferson.
A shortage label on every county
HRSA's September 27, 2026 records put all 38 counties in primary care shortage areas, 19 county-wide and 19 for low-income residents, with Bowie scoring 18. All 38 are mental health shortage areas too, 26 geographically and 12 for low-income residents, Smith, Gregg, Jefferson and Angelina among them; Jasper County scores 20.
USDA's 2023 codes make 28 of the counties nonmetro, and they hold 46.2% of the region's people. CMS lists 28 acute care, 6 critical access, 3 psychiatric and 1 rural emergency hospital. Nonmetro clinic towns such as Center, Tenaha and Jasper suit NURS 6311; for PMHNP students, three psychiatric hospitals for 38 counties argues for outreach long before fall.

UTRGV approval travels with you
A hospital's welcome never replaces UTRGV's own approval. UTRGV's FNP syllabi ask students to secure the preceptor and site, from the approved preceptor list or, for an unlisted clinic, through the Clinical Request Form. PMHNP students wait for clinical faculty clearance before logging hours, and DNP students file affiliation and preceptor paperwork for their project site.
Good Shepherd's new application each semester fits UTRGV's structure anyway, since hours never count toward two clinical courses at once. FNP classes meet in Edinburg, so agree the plan with your course coordinator. You train on your Texas RN license; RN license rules cover the details.

Questions UTRGV students ask
Does CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances find preceptors for students?
Its rotation page expects the opposite: students apply after they have obtained a preceptor, and it discourages calling around for preceptors or openings. So the preceptor search, and any new UTRGV agreement, has to be done before CHRISTUS ever sees your request, ideally well ahead of the cutoff.
How far ahead should I plan an East Texas FNP rotation?
Work backward from the CHRISTUS window you need, then add time for any new UTRGV affiliation agreement, which UTRGV allows 30 to 90 days to complete. Good Shepherd wants requests 60 days before the rotation. By our reckoning, a fall rotation in Tyler means having a committed preceptor by late spring.
Do Beaumont hospitals publish an NP student process?
No NP-specific process turned up. CHRISTUS lists no rotation-request page for its Beaumont ministry, and the Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas excerpt covers only internships through affiliated schools. A committed preceptor plus UTRGV's agreement steps is the practical route.
Can a PMHNP certificate student living in Tyler train locally?
Yes. PMHNP clinicals take place in your state of residence, with a board-certified psychiatrist (ABPN) or an ANCC-certified PMHNP and never at your workplace. Every East Texas county is a mental health shortage area, so begin early; the PMHNP certificate page covers the program's clinical sequence.
